Dao Ba Nan patted Guang Tou on the shoulder and gave him a thumbs-up.
Guang Tou grinned smugly and gently pushed open the wooden door.
The door hinges let out an extremely faint creak as the two slipped into the first-floor lobby of the tavern like a pair of rats.
The lobby lights were still on, and the main door stood wide open.
The cat girl Mei Fei sat on a high stool behind the front counter.
She held a book with both hands, meticulously recording the bills for the Golden Rose Hotel.
Her fluffy cat ears twitched from time to time, and her tail hung limply over the edge of the stool.
Guang Tou gestured to Dao Ba Nan, pointed at Mei Fei, then made a throat-slitting motion across his own neck.
Dao Ba Nan nodded, tightened his grip on the shortsword, and stayed put to keep watch.
Guang Tou clutched a dagger, tiptoed, and crept step by step toward the counter.
He moved with extreme caution, his footsteps making no sound on the wooden floor.
Ten steps, five, three steps.
He had arrived right behind Mei Fei.
Seeing the completely defenseless nape of her neck, a cruel excitement flickered in Guang Tou’s eyes.
If he struck this blow, blood would gush out, and by morning, this corpse would become the best publicity for the Night Demon Society.
Guang Tou took a deep breath, gripped the dagger’s handle with both hands, raised it high, aimed at Mei Fei’s nape, and stabbed down with all his strength!
Just as the dagger was less than an inch from Mei Fei’s skin,
a shadow suddenly shot in through the front door without warning!
Whoosh!
Guang Tou felt a tremendous shock force hit his wrist, instantly splitting his tiger’s mouth, blood gushing out.
The dagger in his hand was sent flying by the shadow, spinning through the air before embedding itself with a thud into a wooden pillar nearby.
Then, a figure entered through the front door.
This person’s speed was ridiculously fast.
Before Guang Tou could react, the person was already in front of him.
The figure wore lightweight leather armor, a black cloth covering the face, leaving only a pair of sharp, gleaming eyes visible.
The guard suddenly raised his right leg and kicked Guang Tou hard in the stomach.
Bang!
Guang Tou was sent flying backward as if hit by a rampaging bull.
He flailed in midair, then crashed heavily into several tables.
The wooden tables shattered, scattering glass cups and wooden bowls across the floor with a loud clatter.
“Ah!” Mei Fei screamed, startled by the sudden commotion.
The piercing scream carried far and wide.
“Die!” Dao Ba Nan, seeing the situation going south, immediately charged forward with his shortsword.
He thrust the blade toward the guard’s heart.
The guard remained completely unfazed. With a slight sidestep, he easily dodged the lethal blow.
In a backhanded flick, the blade carved a long bloody gash across Dao Ba Nan’s arm.
Dao Ba Nan screamed in pain and retreated, clutching his arm.
The entire first-floor lobby instantly turned into a chaotic mess.
The moment Mei Fei’s scream rang out, someone outside had already turned their gaze toward the tavern.
Upstairs, Primrose and her companions, who had just moved from the dining room to their sleeping quarters, reacted instantly upon hearing the noise.
The moment Yuna heard the sound, her right hand pressed directly onto the sword hilt at her waist.
She then made her way to the hallway outside the room first.
After confirming there was no danger, she proceeded down the stairs to the first floor from which the sound came.
Cecilia was not slow to react either. She grabbed the Holy Scepter from the table, the gem at its tip instantly glowing with dazzling white light, and followed closely behind Yuna down the stairs.
Primrose, Lao Ma, and Dorothy brought up the rear.
On the first floor, the battle continued.
Dao Ba Nan, clutching his bleeding arm, stared intently at the guard in front of him.
He knew they had met a tough opponent today. This guard’s swordsmanship was extremely skilled—definitely no ordinary town watch.
Moreover, his goal seemed to be protecting this tavern specifically.
Guang Tou crawled out of the pile of splintered wood, clutching his stomach, grimacing in pain.
Just then, Yuna jumped down directly from the stairs.
Clad in heavy knight armor, she landed with a dull thud, shaking the floor.
“I am a member of the Royal Knight Order! Drop your weapons and surrender immediately!”
Yuna gripped her longsword with both hands, shielding Mei Fei, and shouted sternly at the two men in black.
“This is the land where the gods descend! How dare you evil scoundrels act recklessly! Surrender obediently!”
Cecilia also ran down the stairs, raising the Holy Scepter high, and yelled loudly.
Guang Tou and Dao Ba Nan’s faces turned green at the sight.
“Mission failed, retreat!”
Dao Ba Nan gritted his teeth, pulled a black ball from his belt, and smashed it hard onto the ground.
Bang!
With a muffled explosion, the ball burst, instantly carrying the two men away, vanishing from the spot.
Space Magic Formula… Space Magic?
Cecilia was astonished. Ordinary assassins would never have such a high-level item.
‘If I had known, I would have used Holy Magic to seal off this space in advance.’
‘Hmm… I underestimated them.’
Just then, Primrose, Lao Ma, and Dorothy, whose horns were hidden, made their way down the stairs.
“Lady Goddess, there were assassins here to kill Mei Fei, and they had a magic item inscribed with a Space Magic Formula.”
Cecilia immediately stepped forward and explained the situation. “I’m sorry, I let my guard down. If I had used Holy Magic to seal off the space in advance, they absolutely wouldn’t have escaped.”
“It’s all right.” Primrose patted Cecilia’s slightly lowered head.
Then she turned her gaze to the guard who had fought the assassins.
The guard walked up to Primrose and Cecilia, knelt on one knee very nimbly, placed a fist over the chest, and gave a perfectly standard salute.
“I am a personal guard under Lady Consta, the border lord.”
“I greet Lady Goddess and Lady Saintess.”
The guard lowered her head and reported her affiliation in a very respectful tone.
“A personal guard of Consta? Why are you here?” Cecilia asked with a frown.
“Lady Consta learned that the Lady Goddess and Lord Hero were visiting and feared that petty scoundrels might disturb your rest,”
the guard replied. “So she specially arranged for our elite squad to set up a covert defense around the tavern.
“I had been hiding on the roof just now. When I saw those villains about to attack, I intervened.”
Primrose had already noticed the presence of these two people.
This border lord, Consta, handles matters with thoroughness.
Sending people to protect in secret neither interferes with their private lives nor fails to play a role when needed.
“Who were those two assassins just now?” Primrose asked the guard.
“They are members of the Night Demon Society. Lady Consta will arrive shortly and explain in detail.”
the guard said. “To avoid leaving my post, I did not pursue them. Please forgive my offense, Lady Goddess.”
“You did the right thing. Holding your post is more important than blindly chasing people.” Primrose waved her hand, signaling her to rise.
