How to Be a Good Undercover Agent—Crash Course once said:
“What is the first principle of being an undercover agent?
Trust, trust, and goddamn trust.”
Whether it was gathering intelligence, guiding the other party’s behavior, or withdrawing and running away at a critical moment, this entire series of operations had to be built on the foundation of trust.
Without trust, forget completing the mission—whether one could even keep one’s life was questionable.
So how could trust be established?
Su Bai summarized the contents of the book into a nine-character mantra:
Don’t cause trouble, dare to take responsibility, and know how to handle things.
Not causing trouble meant not creating problems for the undercover target.
This was the bottom line and could effectively lower negative evaluations.
Daring to take responsibility meant shouldering damage for the undercover target and, when necessary, taking the blame without hesitation, which could increase positive evaluations.
As for knowing how to handle things, that meant aggressively targeting the other party’s preferences and raising favorability (crossed out)—trust value.
This was the “essence” she had stayed up several nights summarizing, and the more she thought about it, the more reasonable it seemed.
Except… this set of tactics somehow felt strangely odd.
Where was the oddness?
She always felt that putting this theory into some galgame romance game and using it to conquer a girl would feel completely natural.
No, no, this was definitely an illusion.
She was only doing this to gain trust. How could it be the same?
Su Bai was randomly reviewing her plan in her head.
That’s right, I have an idea. ☝
“Classmate Jiang, let me help you tidy up.” Su Bai said, struck by sudden inspiration.
“Thank you for the kind intention. I arrived quite early and have already almost finished packing.” Jiang Yuelan smiled slightly.
Then she pointed at the pile of luggage behind Su Bai and said, “Rather than helping me, you haven’t even moved your own things yet. Let me help you instead.”
“I don’t need it. I can do it myself…”
Su Bai directly refused and went over wanting to pack on her own, yet Jiang Yuelan showed no intention of stopping and casually assisted from the side without caring.
Su Bai felt a bit of fear in her heart—after all, the other party was a suspected witch, so she did not dare to refuse firmly.
In the end she could only watch with open eyes as Jiang Yuelan took the main role while she stood to the side like a useless little wife, occasionally lending a hand.
Watching Jiang Yuelan busy herself inside and out while she herself could barely insert any help, the corner of Su Bai’s eye could not help twitching.
She felt that long-lost “egg-aching” sensation again—although she no longer had that kind of thing now (sad).
Setting aside Jiang Yuelan’s identity as a witch, Jiang Yuelan was actually treating her quite well?
Uh…
Probably, maybe, perhaps this also counted as achieving her goal? Getting along well with Jiang Yuelan…
…
My ass!
This is completely reversed.
Su Bai wailed in her heart.
The other party must definitely think of her as the kind of troublesome ghost who needed care everywhere.
The kindness Su Bai felt was perhaps some kind of disguise, only maintained so as not to expose her identity…
She was a witch.
Becoming a student and mixing into the campus, she must have secrets.
Who knew her true face?
Maybe one day the Witch-sama would settle accounts with her.
A scene popped into Su Bai’s mind: Jiang Yuelan revealing her true form, taking out a notebook and carefully listing every single thing Su Bai had done wrong, then using cruel methods to torment her one by one.
So, so terrifying QAQ.
At least the few witches she knew seemed like the type who would do something like that.
She absolutely could not let something like that happen!!
“Classmate Jiang, thank you so much for helping me. Let me treat you to dinner tonight. You can decide what to eat.”
Jiang Yuelan tilted her head, then the corners of her mouth lifted slightly as she said softly, “All right. There’s a Western restaurant outside the school gate that I’ve heard is pretty good. Let’s go together.”
My wallet hurts.
That shop clearly did not look cheap.
Although with her salary and savings she would not be unable to afford it, saying she did not feel the pain would be a lie.
“Sure, sure.” Su Bai put on a generous front.
What a joke. Even without association reimbursement, I would still have to treat this meal even if I had to take out a loan.
Not only is it repayment for the help just now, it is also an excellent opportunity to raise trust value.
In those film and television dramas, meal gatherings are the best places for talking business and getting things done.
If you’re going to do it, do it. Seize the opportunity.
Time quickly reached dinner time in the evening.
During the afternoon the two of them finished cleaning the dormitory and took turns showering.
Then Jiang Yuelan seemed tired.
After taking a shower she lay down on the bed and took a short nap.
Meanwhile Su Bai waited for the timing when Jiang Yuelan was about to finish washing and come out of the bathroom, then went downstairs to the small convenience store to buy some daily necessities that were inconvenient to carry.
When she returned she also knocked and asked whether clothes had been changed, avoiding the kind of dramatic and sensual plot that might otherwise occur.
It was simply because Su Bai clearly understood in her heart that on that day her three teammates had told many lies.
Yet there was one place where they had been right, and it was also the part that had scolded her awake:
She could not rely on this acquired female body to approach other girls without any restraint or scruples.
Even if the other party did not care,
even if the other party would never know her past,
even if this would bring trouble to her own life,
Su Bai still could not accept her own “crossing the line.”
Even if it could not be completely avoided, she at least had to try her best to have a clear conscience.
“Let’s go, Classmate Jiang.”
“Wow, the new clothes you changed into for the evening look really cool. They suit you especially well.”
Jiang Yuelan had changed outfits—from the simple sportswear of the afternoon into a matte black trench coat with a sharp, “girl-slaying” style.
Paired with skinny jeans, her entire person radiated a neat androgynous beauty, with several degrees more cool aloofness than in the afternoon.
This set looked especially suitable on Jiang Yuelan.
Praising once could both close the distance and raise trust value.
Not praising would be a waste.
And speaking honestly, this style was indeed cool and more in line with Su Bai’s first impression of Jiang Yuelan.
“As long as you like it.” The corners of Jiang Yuelan’s mouth curved as she took the lead in stepping forward.
“Let’s go, Classmate Xiao Bai.”
“Classmate Xiao Bai?” This form of address sounded both respectful and a bit intimate.
Su Bai froze for a moment.
“Ahem, calling me that is a bit strange.” She cleared her throat and waved her hand.
“How about you call me Su Bai from now on, or just Xiao Bai. A lot of people used to call me that. I don’t mind.”
“All right, Xiao Bai.” Jiang Yuelan agreed straightforwardly, yet her tone shifted.
“But in exchange, you can no longer call me Classmate Jiang either. Calling me Sister Yuelan or Sister Xiao Lan is fine.”
What the heck? Su Bai muttered in her heart.
I’m clearly several years older than Jiang Yuelan. Why should I have to call her sister?
Yet when she raised her eyes and glanced at the height difference between the two of them, then looked at the composure and mature aura on Jiang Yuelan that did not belong to this age, she suddenly felt that calling her sister did not seem improper.
Moreover, the other party was a suspected witch.
Whatever she said was whatever it was.
How would she dare to refute?
“All right, Sister Xiao Lan.” Su Bai obediently replied.
“Let’s set off.”
Hearing this form of address, Jiang Yuelan nodded in satisfaction and took the lead in walking out of the dormitory door.
Su Bai quickly picked up her bag and hurried after her.
