“Reincarnation? I’ve seen it in novels.”
“That’s right. Actually, reincarnation does exist.”
A witch’s field of study is vast, including but not limited to Magic Tools, Magic, Enchantment, Curses, and Alchemy. Reincarnation falls within the category of magic, but it is the highest-level magic.
“What’s your point in telling me this?”
“The scent of a reincarnator’s soul is different from ordinary people’s. It has a very strong fragrance, and each person’s scent is unique.”
“You witches can even sniff that out? How unusual.”
“That’s beside the point. What I mean is, your child might be a reincarnator.”
“I see… And then?”
The Demon King’s indifferent attitude annoyed Catherine, but she was the Demon King, currently in the Imperial Palace—her territory. She had to endure it.
The Demon King had an attitude of, “My child, why are you worrying?” which made Catherine not want to continue the conversation.
“Forget it. Pretend I was never here.” There was probably no point trying to explain it to her. Demon Kings like her usually had something wrong with their heads. Catherine couldn’t be bothered to argue.
She would just go find Sephine directly. She should be working at the tavern now. Perfect timing for a glass of Apple Cider. If she stayed with this Demon King any longer, she felt she might get a Brain Hemorrhage.
“Go ahead.”
She didn’t even try to stop her. How arrogant was this Demon King? Was she not afraid of someone else taking over her child’s body? That confident? Maybe she really was worrying for nothing.
But she would still tell Sephine. Those two weren’t of one mind and soul. They would definitely have different opinions. So Catherine went to the tavern in the center of the Royal Capital and successfully found Sephine on the second floor.
This time, Sephine wasn’t just sitting around being a decoration. She was helping serve drinks and food. When she brought the guests’ ordered drinks or meals to their tables, she even smiled at them, earning quite a few tips.
“At this rate, I’ll be able to pay off my debts in no time!” Thinking this, Sephine beamed with joy. Even her serving speed picked up considerably.
“Welcome!” A new guest had arrived. Sephine greeted them with a bright smile. When she opened her eyes and saw it was Catherine, she remembered Catherine seemed like a very busy person, always tied up with this or that. Back when they were colleagues, she rarely saw her around.
“Miss Catherine, would you like something to drink?”
“Two glasses of Apple Cider, please.”
Catherine really wanted that drink. She was disappointed she couldn’t have it at noon. She rarely had a chance to relax anyway. If the Academy hadn’t exploded, she’d still be tinkering with her research right now.
Sephine brought two glasses of Apple Cider and set them on the table next to Catherine’s seat. She also included a small piece of Dried Meat as a complimentary gift. The boss lady was in a good mood today, so she had prepared gifts for all the afternoon customers. Each drink had a different gift.
She just wondered if the morning customers would find out and come back to make a fuss. But that was a problem to worry about only after it happened.
Auntie Xue could finally relax. As the boss lady, she could now experience what it felt like to be in charge. Catherine’s arrival made her wary.
You see, Sephine was the wife of her good little sister Vi. So, Sephine definitely liked girls. And this person who came and was already laughing and chatting with Sephine, based on her years of experience, Auntie Xue judged her to be a home-wrecker.
This feeling was definitely right. Plus, Vi had said she and Sephine had a falling out and weren’t completely reconciled yet. This woman must be here to steal her away!
Auntie Xue wasn’t going to let that happen.
“Sephine! Come here for a second!” As the boss lady, bossing her employees around was her privilege. If she kept Sephine busy, she could prevent this home-wrecker from having any chance.
“Coming! Miss Catherine, please enjoy yourself first. I still have work to do, so I can’t stay and chat.”
“Why did you resign? They’re practically pushing your position onto me.” Catherine grabbed Sephine’s sleeve, not letting her leave.
“I feel… I’m not qualified enough.”
“You’ve been doing it for almost two years, and you say you’re not qualified? Are you kidding me?” As expected, all magic had side effects. The Demon King only had a superficial understanding of magic, read a few books, and used it recklessly. She had messed Sephine up.
“If you hate that Demon King, you can just say so. There’s no need to be so timid.”
“Sephine!” Auntie Xue called out again. That Catherine seemed to be getting handsy. She was getting worried. And Auntie Xue thought she heard that woman badmouthing Vi.
“The boss lady is calling me. Please let go, Miss Catherine… I’ll decide my own affairs.”
Catherine let go of Sephine. She felt like she had forgotten her original reason for coming here. Oh well, first things first. Drink the Apple Cider. That was good.
“Boss, what’s wrong?”
“Was that customer harassing you? If anyone bothers you, just scream for help, got it?”
“No, she’s my friend. We were just discussing some unpleasant topics. Thanks for your concern, boss.”
Auntie Xue was skeptical. Sephine might be putting on a brave face. Maybe that woman had something on Sephine… She had seen this kind of thing plenty of times. Especially with a young, beautiful wife like Sephine. There were people who enjoyed hunting down married women.
“As long as you’re okay. Remember, if anything happens, you have to call out.”
“Mom! A customer wants Tomato Stir-fried with Tomato!”
“I’m going to the kitchen. You work hard now.”
“Mm.” Sephine nodded in reply, but also felt the boss lady might be a little too sensitive. Maybe she treated every employee like family. A lot of owners of these small shops were like that. It didn’t surprise Sephine.
Catherine waved Sephine over. It seemed she still had something to say.
“I forgot to mention earlier. I actually have something very important to tell you.”
“It’s fine. The shop isn’t too busy right now anyway.” The morning customers who had come out of curiosity had already forgotten about the incident by the afternoon. So the tavern was back to its normal customer flow, not too hectic.
Sephine sat down in front of Catherine. This was the first time Catherine had had such a quiet, private moment with Sephine. She had to admit, the Demon King’s taste was indeed good.
There was a huge contrast between Sephine’s personality and her appearance. Every action and mannerism was that of an adult, yet she had the face of a young girl. It gave off a unique feeling.
“Sephine, do you know about Reincarnators?”
“Huh? Why bring that up all of a sudden?” Sephine started to sweat nervously. This had always been her secret. How did Catherine suddenly mention it? Could it be…
“I’ve recently discovered something very strange. It involves you.”
“Is that so… haha…” Sephine appeared calm on the surface, but inside she was already thinking about making a run for it. Even though she was technically a proper local now, her soul belonged to another world.
Was this crazy magic lady trying to use her for some kind of alchemy experiment?
