Masha nodded, indicating her understanding. “Then, the reason to mobilize the Night Demon Society members is that this second prince, under the pretext of meeting with the Goddess, has brought a large amount of supplies to the border to buy people’s loyalty.”
“If he succeeds and gains the Goddess’s approval, the kingdom’s arrogance will swell. If the kingdom’s arrogance swells, it will be a huge disaster for our Night Demon Society. The Demon King’s descent plan will be hindered.”
After hearing this, Consta’s mouth twitched into a faint smile. “Mm, it’s acceptable. This reason is perfect.”
“Those fanatical members, as long as they hear that it will affect the Demon King’s plan, will surely pounce like mad dogs.”
“Remember, the bigger the commotion, the better. Let the whole world know that the Night Demon Society ambushed the second prince. That way, those idiots in the royal capital will focus all their attention on the Night Demon Society.”
“It’s time for the Night Demon Society to catch the eyes of those politicians in the royal capital.”
“I understand, President.” Masha gave a slight bow, even changing her form of address.
In this study, there was no lord or steward, only the president and vice-president of the Night Demon Society.
Masha turned around, walked to the study door, and as she grasped the doorknob, she suddenly stopped.
“President, those two idiots who went to the tavern the night before last to assassinate that cat girl—should we really not investigate how they died?”
Consta was taken aback, then shook her head. “No need to investigate.”
“Not even a scrap was left at the scene, just that dense mana residue.”
“It must have been some passing high-level monster or a reclusive strong person who conveniently blasted them. They’re dead anyway, just two wastes who acted on their own. Not worth wasting time.”
Masha said nothing more, pushed the door open, walked out, and closed it tightly behind her.
After Masha left, Consta sat in her chair, reflecting on the Night Demon Society organization.
The outside world believed the Night Demon Society was an extreme cult that worshipped the Demon King and sought to destroy human society. Those desperate outlaws, commoners whose families were ruined by nobles, joined full of hatred for this world, shouting every day to welcome the Demon King’s descent and burn everything to ashes.
But that wasn’t entirely true.
The Night Demon Society, from beginning to end, was a shell organization created under Saint Freya’s orders, a tool through and through.
Saint Freya had made it very clear to her back then. “We need a knife, a knife in the shadows that we can use to stab those nobles at any time, and a knife that can never be traced back to us.”
And so, the Night Demon Society was born.
Consta was the president, but she had never shown her face in front of any member. All the public-facing tasks were done by Masha, the vice-president. Masha wore a mask and a black robe, using that cold, emotionless voice to brainwash those hate-filled members and assign them tasks.
Those members were terrified of Masha and had no idea the real president was the very lord of Tattle Town they saw every day. This tactic of being hidden in plain sight was executed brilliantly.
However, with more people it becomes harder to lead. The Night Demon Society took in mentally unstable outlaws, so sometimes accidents inevitably occurred.
Like the incident the night before last.
Thinking of this, Consta couldn’t help rubbing her temples.
That night, she was in the study reviewing the territory’s tax documents, which gave her a headache. Suddenly, Masha ran in to report that assassins had infiltrated the Golden Rose Inn, targeting the cat girl named Mei Fei at the front desk.
Consta was so startled she almost snapped the quill in her hand.
Golden Rose Inn! That was where Lady Goddess and the Hero were staying! By the time she confirmed the assassins were from the Night Demon Society—specifically those two idiots, Guang Tou and Dao Ba Lian—she wished she could find them right then and have them hacked to pieces.
Those two morons, to show off within the organization, actually dared to kill and create panic right under Lady Goddess’s nose! If this alarmed Lady Goddess and made her think Tattle Town’s public security was terrible, giving her a bad impression of the lord, then she would lose face in every possible way.
She immediately rode a carriage at full speed to the inn. When she arrived, the hall was in chaos. Aiwei had already driven off the two assassins. Lady Goddess and the Hero also came downstairs.
Consta was panicking inside. She steeled herself, stepped forward, pretended not to know anything, and bowed to Lady Goddess. Then, with a straight face, she explained to Lady Goddess what an evil organization the Night Demon Society was, shifting all the blame onto that ethereal faith worshipping the Demon King.
When Lady Goddess heard that, she even showed a look of sudden realization.
Consta was frantically wiping cold sweat in her mind. Thankfully, Lady Goddess was magnanimous and didn’t hold her, the lord, responsible for public security. Moreover, she took the opportunity to request a public speech from Lady Goddess the next day, successfully diverting attention.
As for those two idiots, Guang Tou and Dao Ba Lian, when she later searched the abandoned logging camp outside town, she only found traces of high-density mana residue, not even a bone. Consta speculated that those two must have been unlucky, encountered some high-level monster, and were directly blasted into bits by magic. Served them right—saved her the trouble of cleaning house.
—
The luxurious suite on the second floor of the Golden Rose Inn.
Yuna, holding a thick white towel, was crouched on the high-quality plush carpet behind the sofa, wiping the floor expressionlessly. Her movements were mechanical: once, twice, three times, with great force. The towel quickly became saturated with water, growing heavy.
Yuna didn’t say a single word, and even her breathing was very quiet. But the cold aura radiating from her—‘I understand everything, but I say nothing, you’re all disgusting’—had already filled the entire room.
Primrose was sitting on a single-seat sofa farthest from Yuna, her hands gripping the armrests tightly. The colors on her face were like a palette—red one moment, white the next, then green.
‘What the hell is this?!’
She, a dignified goddess who descended into another world, bearing the great responsibility of saving the world, had just received the fervent worship of tens of thousands of commoners in the central square, basking in glory. Yet the moment she returned to her room, she ended up in this utterly disastrous, socially fatal legendary scene.
Lao Ma had her face buried in her chest and fell asleep. Cecilia was hugging her from behind and sniffing her deeply. Then she sat down right in a puddle of Cecilia’s excited drool.
The worst part was that this scene was witnessed by Yuna—that rigid, serious royal knight and personal maid who harbors special feelings for the Saintess.
