Dinner was, as usual, lavish, but I ate distractedly.
My odd behavior caught Aunt Yuyuโs attention, and she shot a questioning glance at Little Aunt.
Little Aunt put on an innocent face, claiming ignorance, then winked subtly.
Aunt Yuyu sighed, glanced at her, and picked up some food for me. โWhatโs wrong, Little Tong? You look out of it.โ
โDid you watch a scary movie and get spooked? No worries, Little Aunt can sleep with you tonight as thanks for this afternoon. Howโs that?โ Little Aunt teased, grinning.
โNo, Iโm fine!โ I said, snapping out of it.
I quickly shoveled down my rice. โIโm full. Iโm gonna take a bath.โ
โSo early today? Iโll grab your change of clothes.โ Aunt Yuyu offered.
โNo need, I can get them myself.โ I said, waving her off and putting my dishes in the sink. โOh, Iโm pretty tired today. Iโll sleep right after my bath, so no need for warm milk, Aunt Yuyu.โ
Watching my petite figure slip into my room, Anrou and Yoyo exchanged a glance.
โYou think itโs weird too, right, Anrou-jie? Tongtongโs never been this well-behaved. She usually games till eight or nine. Going to bed at six? Thatโs not normal.โ Yoyo said.
Anrou nodded, thoughtful. โYoyo.โ
โGot it! Iโll have a โheart-to-heartโ with Tongtong and get to the bottom of it.โ Yoyo said, eyes gleaming.
โHow bad is your sleeping posture?โ Anrou asked, deadpan.
โโฆ???โ
After my bath, I changed into pajamas and, to sell my act, yawned repeatedly while saying goodnight to Little Aunt and Aunt Yuyu.
Then I turned off the roomโs lights and slipped into bed.
Of course, I wasnโt actually sleeping.
When Syl told me about the hidden organizationโs special ritual at the Radiant Monastery, held around midnight, I hesitated but decided to stay up.
In my past life, staying up late was no big deal.
But as a minor now, even an idiot knows itโs bad for kids.
With Little Aunt and Aunt Yuyu watching me, getting caught would mean endless lectures from them and a scolding from my parents when they returned.
So, deceiving them felt wrong, but for tonightโs plan, I had no choice.
Lost in thought, time passed quickly.
My phone vibrated under my pillow, jolting me awakeโIโd nearly dozed off.
Thankfully, Iโd prepared.
Checking my phone, it was 10:51 p.m.
Worried the ritual might involve early preparations, making late entry harder, Iโd agreed with Syl to log in around 11 p.m.
I wasnโt late yet.
Lifting the blanket, I crept to the door and listened for sounds outside.
Confirming Aunt Yuyu and Little Aunt were asleep, I sighed in relief.
But to be safe, I slipped a piece of paper under the door to block the gap, then returned to my bed and activated the access device.
The deviceโs glow wasnโt noticeable in daylight but stood out at night.
I was glad for my foresight, though the startup noise was unavoidable.
โCome on, come onโฆโ I muttered, clenching my fists nervously as the device connected.
It felt like it was taking forever, though I knew it was quick.
โYou seem in a hurry.โ a voice said.
โI donโt want Aunt Yuyu and them to hear.โ I replied.
โDonโt want them knowing youโre sneaking games at night?โ the voice asked.
โIf they find out, Iโm dead.โ I said.
โGot it. Want me to prep a midnight snack?โ the voice offered.
โSure, thanks, Aunt Yuyu.โ I said, then froze.
I spun around to see Aunt Yuyuโs smiling face, eerie in the dark and my nervous state. โA-Aunt Yuyuโฆ when did you come in?โ
โWhen you started the device.โ Aunt Yuyu said, blinking and turning on the bedside lamp.
โAunt Yuyu, Iโm sorry!โ I said, sitting on the bed like a guilty kid awaiting judgmentโwhich I was.
But no scolding or lecture came.
Curious, I looked up to see Aunt Yuyu handing me a cup of warm milk. โDrink this before playing. It wonโt take long.โ
โEhโฆ?โ
I took the cup, dazed, unable to process.
โDonโt just sit there. Drink before it cools.โ Aunt Yuyu said, tapping my forehead. โI used to stay up gaming too, so I get it. But I know my Little Tongโs a good kid. You must have something important to do, right?โ
Her words made me blush.
I sipped the milk to hide my embarrassment.
โSo, donโt hide important stuff from me and Yoyo. Weโre not unreasonable.โ Aunt Yuyu paused, her tone turning serious. โBut that doesnโt mean you can stay up whenever. Got it?โ
โI understand. Thanks, Aunt Yuyu.โ I said, nodding, feeling even guiltier for deceiving them.
โDonโt play too late.โ Aunt Yuyu said, smiling and patting my head.
She headed for the door, but I stopped her. โUm, how did you know?โ
โYou were too weird at dinner, so Yoyo and I kept an eye out. Didnโt expect you to hold out this long before slipping up. Now, Iโm off to rest.โ Aunt Yuyu said, winking.
So she stayed up just for me?
I pursed my lips, touched.
But before the feeling could deepen, Yoyoโs voice came from outside. โAnrou-jie, the takeoutโs here. What movie should we watch?โ
โโฆโ
โโฆโ
โUh, I just felt like relaxing tonightโฆโ Anrou said, her gaze shifting under my scrutinizing loli stare.
At her desk, Syl heard a soft whimper behind her.
She gently closed her book and placed it on the shelf. โYour Highness is a bit late.โ
โGot held up.โ I said, stretching and sticking out my tongue.
I climbed out of bed, changed clothes, and Syl draped a thin but warm shawl over me.
โHold tight, Your Highness.โ Syl said, scooping me up in a princess carry and pushing open the window.
Near midnight, the night outside was heavy, the moon hidden behind thick clouds, as if hinting at something secretive tonight.
Avoiding patrol teams, Syl soon brought me to the south tower of the Radiant Monastery.
This was tonightโs ritual venue.
As expected, though the ritual was set for midnight, many had already gathered.
The tower glowed faintly, clearly in preparation.
โSo many people, Syl.โ I said, eyeing the monastery members at the entrance, cloaked in black robes like a secretive group. โAnd so mysterious.โ
โBetween one hundred and two hundred, about a twentieth of the monasteryโs population.โ Syl said, scanning the scene.
โThat many?โ I said, surprised.
Forming such a large, disciplined organization within the Radiant Monastery without detection spoke to their strict secrecy.
Bypassing watchful eyes, Syl sneaked us into the tower, hiding us in the shadows of a high windowโs ledge.
It was wide enough for both of us, hard to spot, and offered a clear view of the crowd below.
But that was it.
The hall was dimly lit, barely illuminated, and the black-robed figures made it hard to discern details.
Shadows moved in the faint light.
Though the gathering hadnโt started, some not involved in preparations whispered among themselves.
Occasionally, a voice rose slightly, preaching something in a hushed yet fervent tone.
โCanโt hear a thing.โ I said, giving up after trying. โWhatever, weโll find out tonight.โ
โHalf an hour to go.โ Syl said, glancing at the thick night outside. โYour Highness could rest a bit.โ
โNo way I can sleep.โ I said, shaking my head, propping my cheek.
It was like a mystery novel reaching the thrilling whodunit momentโwhoโd do homework now?
Speaking of novels, I remembered something.
I pulled out the forgotten Young Lady Liya (Volume 2) from my bag. โCan I read my novel, Syl?โ
โIโll keep watch. Rest easy, Your Highness.โ Syl said, nodding.
With Sylโs protection, I relaxed and opened the book, diving in.
The story picked up from the last volumeโs end.
Liya, having uncovered the earl and his fiancรฉeโs deal with a demon, pretended nothing was wrong while guarding against their probing, searching for an escape.
She met new guards whoโd also discovered the castleโs secrets, and they devised an escape plan together.
Sadly, the earl uncovered their plan.
On the escape night, the guards were corrupted by demonic power to cover Liyaโs retreat.
Realizing she couldnโt escape the castle, Liya resolved to return to the basement and sacrifice herself to stop the demonโs spread, in exchange for its promise.
โI canโt believe you have the courage to face me.โ a low voice rumbled in the darkness.
Liya closed her eyes. โYou want my body, donโt you? I ask that you spare the innocent.โ
โI can grant that, but think carefully. Becoming a puppet isnโt easy to bear.โ A massive hand reached from a dark gate toward Liya.
The penultimate scene ended.
Anyone would assume a tragic ending, given the dark, despairing tone throughout.
But I didnโt think so.
No matter how free the Radiant Monasteryโs faith, it was rooted in light.
A book glorifying evilโs triumph would be banned.
Since I could read this, something unexpected must reverse the outcome between this scene and the end.
What twist could rewrite the ending in one scene?
I was eager to find out.
But as I turned to the final scene, Sylโs voice broke in. โYour Highness, thereโs movement.โ
