Hayoonโs question prompted the customer to explain. As he approached 56804, the owner of Momโs Place had called him over, offering free food if he spread good word about their place.
โSounds like soliciting,โ Hayoon said.
The customer nodded, pulling out his phone to show Hayoon. Photos of Momโs Placeโs grimy kitchen and recent delivery reviews criticizing their dirty food filled the screen. Hayoon covered his mouth in shock. Theyโre running a business like this?
He forced an awkward smile, taking the customerโs order. In the kitchen, Sihoo was sweeping the floor. โSihoo, Todayโs Special order,โ Hayoon said.
โOne sec,โ Sihoo replied, wiping his hands and glancing at the customer before starting. He prepared a Korean spread: a tray with lacquered dishes holding fried sides, eggplant namul, leafy greens, and pollack, paired with multigrain rice and red beef radish soup. It looked irresistible.
Ding. Hayoonโs eyes widened at the spread. He delivered it to the customer, who eagerly snapped photos. Click.
โIs this Todayโs Special?โ the customer asked.
โYup, enjoy!โ Hayoon said, nodding.
The customer scooped a big spoonful of multigrain rice, chewing slowly. โThe mix of millet, black rice, and regular rice is perfect,โ he said, then exclaimed, โWow!โ I was craving beef radish soup today, and itโs spot-on. This place is addicting. Boss, youโre the best! Iโll post a glowing review on Instagram!
His satisfied expression drew nods from nearby tables. Hayoon glanced at Sihoo. How does this guy nail every customerโs taste?
Buzz. Hayoon checked his phone, eyes widening. He approached Sihoo. โIf anything comes up, call me.โ
โWhatโs up?โ Sihoo asked.
Hayoon waved his phone. โGotta take a call outside.โ
Outside, Hayoon answered, his face lighting up at the voice. โYou, hyung!โ
โHowโs Sihoo doing?โ the voice asked.
โHeโs holding up. Never seems to tire,โ Hayoon said.
โReally? Oh, tell Dad Iโll stop by when Iโm back in Korea.โ
โIs this about Sihoo?โ Hayoon asked.
โYeah, heard thereโs trouble with next door?โ
โHah, donโt get me startedโฆโ Hayoon glanced at Momโs Place, catching Sukyoung glaring. He looked away, continuing, โHyung, Iโll tell you tonight.โ
โCool, Iโll have time then.โ
Hayoon hung up after a brief chat, frowning at Sukyoungโs attempts to lure passing customers. A customer called, โExcuse me!โ
โYes?โ Hayoon replied.
โHow longโs the wait?โ
Hayoon glanced inside. Sihoo held up five fingers. โAbout five minutes,โ Hayoon said.
Jingle. Sihoo emerged with a tray. โHyung, give these to the waiting customers.โ
โGot it,โ Hayoon said, handing out ceramic cups of warm barley tea to the line outside. In the chilly weather, customers clutched the cups, savoring the heat.
โWow, so warm and nutty,โ one said.
โNever had barley tea this good,โ another added.
โHere, Mom will blow on it,โ a mother said to her child.
Customers chatted, bonding over the tea. Hayoon glanced at Momโs Place. Sukyoung, fuming, stormed inside.
โDo you do takeout?โ a customer asked.
โYeah, Iโd eat here every day if you did, especially the Korean dishes,โ another said.
โIโll talk to the boss about it. Hang tight,โ Hayoon said, entering the kitchen. Seeing Sihooโs frantic pace, he thought, We need another part-timer.
Sihoo, spotting him, asked him to collect table dishes. Sihoo soaked them in soapy water, then loaded the dishwasher. While it ran, they wiped tables, preparing for more customers.
โWorth the wait. The foodโs amazing, and youโre so kind,โ a customer said.
Sihoo scratched his cheek. โThank you. Sorry for the wait. Order, and weโll make it delicious.โ
โYour hospitality keeps me coming back,โ the customer said.
Sihoo smiled awkwardly, retreating to the kitchen. Hayoon followed, asking, โEver thought about takeout?โ
โTakeout? Out of nowhere?โ Sihoo said, flipping a pan.
โAfter that guy the other day, customers are asking for it,โ Hayoon said.
Sihoo glanced at the line outside. Itโd take until 3 p.m. to clear. Adding takeout? โNot sure yet. Letโs talk tonight, hyung.โ
โCool,โ Hayoon said, heading to the dining area to handle the crowd.
Closing up as usual, Sihoo walked home, happy the diner was thriving but feeling drained. Was it this busy when Kanghoon hyung was here? Daily revenue now outstripped a salarymanโs monthly pay. Even after ingredient costs, premium meat and fish, utilities, and depreciation, profits were high. Really high.
He thought of Hayoon, hustling in the dining area. Heโs working so hard. A raise was in order, but the sheer volume of customers multiplied their workload. Despite their speed, there was no time to rest.
Sigh. Reaching home, Sihoo saw the iron gate. Creak. In the yard, the mini field needed weeding. Exhausted, he dragged himself inside, collapsing on the sofa. His joints screamed.
โTime flies. Already a monthโฆโ Since taking over 56804, customers kept growing despite Momโs Placeโs antics. Remarkable growth, but a problem loomed.
โShould I drop out of school?โ he wondered.
Buzz. His phone vibrated. Seeing the caller, Sihooโs eyes lit up, a smile spreading. โHyung! Long time no see! Howโs Japan? Learning a lot?โ
โSlow down, breathe,โ the voice laughed. It was Yoon Kanghoon, 56804โs former owner and Sihooโs senior.
โI was missing you today,โ Sihoo said.
โI heard the dinerโs doing well, but youโre famous now?โ Kanghoon said.
โFamous?โ Sihooโs eyes darted, recalling the past.
โYeah, 56804โs blowing up on Instagram. Made me proud.โ
Sihoo, too busy for social media, used his phone only for texts and calls. โHyung, I barely touch my phone.โ
โThat busy? Wish you could borrow a catโs paws to cook,โ Kanghoon teased.
Sihoo chuckled. โSeriously.โ Kanghoonโs laughter roared. A faint voice interrupted, โMaster, Chairman Koo is looking for you.โ
โHold on,โ Kanghoon said, muffling the phone.
