Just as she was laughing, Ying Su suddenly froze.
Then she started vomiting, blood spewing from her mouth. Ying Su covered her mouth, but it still leaked onto the white sheets, staining them red.
W-What's happening?
Ying Su's body suddenly felt agonizing pain, but that shouldn't be possible.
This collar only limited her transformation ability, it didn't change her essence.
Right now, she was just a mass of blood plasma, so how could she be in this much pain?
It felt like she was being burned...
What had she done just now?
Going through each action one by one, Ying Su locked onto the only possible thing she had done.
She drank blood.
Was the blood poisoned?
But that shouldn't be the case. Even if it was poisoned, a constitution like hers shouldn't have been harmed.
Without a moment's hesitation, Ying Su grabbed Misha, who was right beside her. But she quickly realized that was a mistake.
Because Misha moved instinctively. With a click, Ying Su's hand was twisted and broken, and then Misha pinned her down.
"Gauntlet Sword!"
Ying Su grabbed the sword in her mouth and thrust upward, but Misha caught it barehanded. Still, the sharp blade cut her arm. As the sword was snatched away, a few drops of blood fell onto Ying Su's face, and she extended her tongue to lick them.
"Hiss... ah... cough... Fuck, so that's it! Damn it, trying to poison me?!"
"Huff... huff... What madness are you on now?" Misha said, even sounding impatient. Perhaps Miss Olivia's decision was correct—keeping her trapped like this was the best choice.
"Do you even know your blood is poisoned?!" Ying Su struggled as she spoke, but Misha had her locked down tight, unable to move at all.
"Huh?"
Misha paused, then thought for a moment, and pressed her still-bleeding palm against Ying Su's face.
"What... what are you doing—aaahhh—!"
Having confirmed that her blood really did have this harmful effect, Misha froze. Then Ying Su kicked her off with a roll.
"You were plotting against me!" Ying Su pointed at Misha, but as soon as she raised her hand, it bent at a ninety-degree angle and dropped. Ying Su quickly snapped it back into place.
But Misha didn't let out a sinister laugh like Ying Su had expected.
She just hugged her knees and curled up in the corner of the room, saying dejectedly, "B-But... Miss Olivia said my blood tasted the best..."
"..." Ying Su paused. Looking at her like that, it really didn't seem like she had intended to harm her. So she said, "You believe anything Olivia says? When has she ever said what she meant?"
"Mm... th-that's true..." It seemed Misha wasn't completely stupid. She quickly caught on and said angrily, "If my blood is poisonous, why didn't she tell me?!"
"Do you know what the deal is?" Ying Su asked as she summoned the Gauntlet Sword back, slit open her own stomach, pulled out her stomach, shook it a couple of times, and shoved it back in.
"My biological parents were hunters. Hunters inject themselves with various serums so that creatures like vampires can't feed on their blood. After prolonged use, the blood and body retain residues. I might have inherited some of that..."
"No, that's too late to discover," Ying Su complained. If it weren't for her, who knew how long this would have been hidden?
The thought of Olivia watching Misha happily serve her poisoned blood, looking at her with expectant eyes, then forcing herself to maintain her dignity and chug it down, even saying it tasted good—Ying Su couldn't help but laugh.
"Haha, Olivia is so dumb!"
"I'll go get you different food right away." Misha sighed. "I'll clean the sheets later."
"Uh, if you just take off this collar, I can clean it up myself."
"Please don't get your hopes up. I'll only do that on Miss Olivia's orders, little master." With that, Misha tidied up the mess and was about to push the cart out.
"Hey, wait. I don't need blood anyway. I'm not hungry. Find me something to pass the time," Ying Su said, not sure if Misha heard her.
But she just lay back down and continued staring blankly at the ceiling.
This place was safe. Misha had no intention of harming her. Ying Su could finally rest.
[Save point detected. Would you like to spend 1 point to set a save point?]
"How stingy. Even save points cost points. Set it," Ying Su said. Now she had zero points left.
She still had a mission, but it wasn't mandatory. She could rest for a while before doing it.
But Ying Su didn't have much ambition now. Staying here seemed like a good choice too.
A little while later, Ying Su saw Misha bring in a tray with a few books on it. Ying Su didn't care what was on the tray at all. She wiped the blood off her hands and picked up a book to pass the time.
"Mm... Misha, look at me." Ying Su pointed at herself.
"Wh-What?"
"Do I look like a child?" Ying Su held up the early childhood education book.
"N-No... don't I?"
"I... forget it. I'll make do." Ying Su looked at the book titled Peppa in her hands, shook her head, and opened it.
Meanwhile, Misha cleaned the room, changing the bloodstained sheets and bedding, and tidying up.
"Misha."
"What is it?"
"Tell me about it. What is Volk?" Ying Su asked. After all, her blood came from Olivia, and she felt she needed to understand.
"Adam's eldest son was Cain. Cain killed his brother Abel and was banished. His child was Enoch, who founded the city of Enoch, also called the Kingdom of Enoch. Enoch had thirteen children, the ancestors of the thirteen clans.
Later, because of the Great Flood, as Cain's descendants with cursed blood, they couldn't escape. The eldest of the thirteen siblings, Ahan, cried out to God,
'The ones who sinned were our ancestors. What fault do we have? Our ancestor killed his brother out of jealousy, but now I have to offend You to keep my siblings alive. I beg You to save us.'
So God took pity on them, but the cursed blood couldn't be removed—it was their original sin. So He blessed them, allowing them to survive at the bottom of the dark, flowing sea where there was no sunlight and no food. After the flood receded, the blessing remained, forcing them to move only at night, drink blood, and be unable to cross running water.
Volk is one of those branches."
"And Olivia?"
"Miss Olivia is one of only two purebloods of Volk... well, counting you, it should be three now," Misha continued. "After the flood receded, there were only thirteen members of the thirteen clans. To continue, they interbred, and the children born had the pure bloodline of their parents.
But as the clan expanded, some interbred with humans or converted them, and that's how modern vampires were born."
Ying Su felt like she was listening to a story; it didn't sound like any proper history. But she became curious about something else.
"Does this world have a God?" Ying Su asked. Since creatures like the Hounds of Tindalos existed, having a God didn't seem that far-fetched.
Misha shook her head. "I don't know, but Miss Olivia once said that God is dead."
Ying Su didn't know if that was true or false, but she nodded in agreement. "Yeah. If the old man God were still around, there wouldn't be so many monsters and demons."
She paused, then asked, "Have you ever killed anyone?"
"Yes."
"Never mind." Ying Su didn't feel surprised at all. "When is Olivia coming back?"
Even though this place was nice, being chained up like a dog was really uncomfortable. At least let her have a longer leash!
"I don't know," Misha said.
"I really want to go out and see things, Misha. I don't even know what's outside this room."
"Nothing much. Mostly empty, uncleaned rooms," Misha said.
"Misha, get me some thicker books. Don't bring me early childhood education anymore."
"Mm."
More time passed. Books piled up beside Ying Su. She didn't know how long it had been, but Olivia still hadn't returned. When Misha had nothing to do, she would sit on the chair in the room and knit to pass the time.
Even though Ying Su couldn't go out, her days were settled and simple.
But she felt like something was missing.
What was it...
"Misha, aren't there any electronics here?"
"No, there's no internet or electronics. If you need, I can get you some simple things, but I can't set up internet."
"Why?"
"This place is very hidden. Only Miss Olivia knows how to get in. The internet might expose this location."
"Mm... Are there many books left?" Ying Su looked at the pile of various books next to her. The quantity was considerable.
"Enough to last until Miss Olivia comes back."
"What do you mean, 'enough'?"
"Mm... To be more accurate, at your current reading speed, the collection here should last you about a year."
Ying Su wasn't surprised by the large number of books, but asked, "Olivia needs a year to be out?"
"That's just an estimate," Misha said. "She's been away from the clan for a long time. There's a lot for her to handle. But I think she'll find time to come see you."
"Sounds like I'm some kind of kept mistress," Ying Su said.
"I suppose a daughter could also be called a kind of 'kept little mistress,'" Misha said.
"???" Ying Su froze for a moment, then said, "No, I'm not Olivia's daughter!"
"??"
Misha froze too, looking Ying Su up and down.
Olivia had been missing for years, and when she came back, she brought a younger Volk pureblood, and this person carried that scent of Miss Olivia.
Every vampire clan had its own unique scent. Children would carry part of their parents' scent. Vampires identified people by smell rather than appearance—after all, vampire appearances were changeable—and used that to determine clan and parentage.
Misha had been with Olivia long enough. She wouldn't mistake that smell. It was definitely Miss Olivia's scent!
Wasn't this just Olivia going out and secretly having a baby and bringing back her daughter!
