Time passed to the next day. Bai Lili felt it was really boring here. Not a single team had arrived, which made her suspect the competition was rigged.
She sat on a large rock outside the small hut, swinging her legs. Occasionally a cool breeze blew by, and Bai Lili found it quite refreshing. Then she felt the ground shake beneath her feet. Lightning illuminated the entire ancient forest, and from somewhere in the distance came a wolf howl loud enough to echo through the whole woods.
Bai Lili felt the entire forest tremble at that howl. ‘This doesn’t look like the work of a low-level magical beast. Could someone have been stupid enough to provoke a high-level one?’ If that was really the case, Bai Lili thought they were pretty lucky—opening a blind box and getting a hidden item.
At the source of the lightning, Long Chen stood face to face with a Thunder Wolf.
Lin Shuran spoke angrily beside him.
“You said this Thunder Wolf was only a level-four magical beast! Now it’s clearly above level seven!”
Long Chen heard Lin Shuran’s words and retorted, trying to defend himself.
“How was I supposed to know? When I first saw that Thunder Wolf, it behaved exactly like a level-four beast.”
Lin Shuran was furious but helpless. If Long Chen weren’t still somewhat useful, she would have gotten rid of him long ago. A double-S-rank ability used so pathetically—that was a first.
She only thought these things in her mind without showing it. Then she directly hugged Long Chen’s arm. Feeling the touch of two giant peaks, Long Chen was completely disoriented.
Lin Shuran looked at this pervert in front of her, a trace of disgust flashing in her eyes, but it vanished instantly. Long Chen didn’t notice her change at all. Then Lin Shuran threw out a smoke bomb. This specially made ball would buy her a few seconds to operate.
By the time the Thunder Wolf looked back at Long Chen’s spot, the people were gone. The lightning on its body gradually calmed down.
On Bai Lili’s side, seeing the distant lightning disappear, she assumed the magical beast had finished its fight. After all, such a huge commotion was clearly beyond the scope of what students like them could handle. To exaggerate, even if their academy principal showed up, he’d probably take two slaps and then leave.
Bai Lili heard movement behind her. Lilith, who had come to find her, was staring at something behind Bai Lili. Confused, Bai Lili asked.
“Why are you frozen in place?”
Lilith pointed behind Bai Lili. Bai Lili turned her head and saw a majestic wolf head right behind her. She stiffly turned back.
After a moment, she realized the Thunder Wolf hadn’t done anything to her—it just stared quietly. Bai Lili waved her hand in front of the Thunder Wolf. It showed no aggression. Then the Thunder Wolf found a comfortable spot and curled up, as if this place had always been its home.
Seeing that the Thunder Wolf was friendly, Bai Lili decided not to bother with it anymore. If the huge commotion from earlier was caused by this Thunder Wolf, then even all of them combined would be crushed.
The Thunder Wolf seemed to be asleep. Bai Lili took a few glances. Its body was mainly cyan and white, with two horns on its head. Although it had long fur, some areas were covered in cyan scales. It looked very imposing.
Not long after, Bai Lili followed Lilith away. As soon as she left, the Thunder Wolf opened one eye and stared in the direction Bai Lili had gone. Then it closed its eye again, as if watching an old acquaintance.
When Bai Lili and Lilith reached the hut, Lilith asked.
“Lili, what was that commotion outside?”
Bai Lili thought about how to answer.
“If I’m not mistaken, it was the work of that Thunder Wolf now lying outside the door.”
Lilith pondered for a moment. She hadn’t sensed any hostility from the Thunder Wolf. In fact, at first glance, she even found it somewhat familiar. Lilith didn’t know why, but recently she had been having flashes of memories, like scenes from her own past playing out before her eyes, only to be forgotten again and again.
Su Ruo and Qing Hanyin arrived from outside. Seeing the Thunder Wolf resting not far from the hut, they tiptoed inside. As soon as she entered, Su Ruo checked Bai Lili for any injuries. Bai Lili struggled to push Su Ruo away.
“I’m fine. That Thunder Wolf outside means no harm. It’s actually nice to have it out there as a guardian.”
Su Ruo and Qing Hanyin nodded. They had seen the huge commotion while collecting food in the forest. The Thunder Wolf was also of lightning attribute. If it was responsible, then they couldn’t even drive it away—surviving would be a problem.
Bai Lili cracked open the door to peek at the Thunder Wolf. It seemed to be looking back at them, scaring her into slamming the door shut. That Thunder Wolf’s senses were really sharp.
‘Surviving here shouldn’t be a problem,’ Bai Lili thought. ‘That Thunder Wolf is probably the strongest magical beast around here. With the strength it showed earlier, it would be a calamity-level threat back in our world.’
Lilith tugged at Bai Lili’s sleeve and pulled her aside.
“Lili, don’t you think that Thunder Wolf seems familiar? Even though its appearance has changed a bit, the feeling it gives me is like the one we met before.”
Bai Lili thought for a moment and waved her hand.
“How could that be? The Thunder Wolf we saw was in the school’s first-level Hunting Zone.”
Qing Hanyin, however, agreed with Lilith. She added for Bai Lili.
“Lili, actually, what we call a Hunting Zone is just a region. The academy sealed off dangerous areas to prevent students from entering. That’s the Hunting Zone we see. But in truth, there is no such thing as a ‘Hunting Zone’—it’s a continent in another world.”
Su Ruo caught Qing Hanyin’s meaning.
“So you’re saying that Thunder Wolf came from the original first-level Hunting Zone to here.”
Qing Hanyin nodded and continued.
“Based on its current behavior, that Thunder Wolf is definitely not level four as it appeared before. Rough estimate: it’s above level seven.”
Su Ruo had seen level-six magical beasts fight. Though the destruction was earth-shaking, she had never seen one whose roar alone could make the entire jungle tremble. Just feeling that pressure from a distance, witnessing the lightning shooting into the sky—that’s when Su Ruo truly understood what real power was.
