“Kate, this is all a misunderstanding. These are… ah, right! Aura accidentally bumped me around inside her mouth while she was carrying me last night!”
A flash of inspiration struck Eileen, and she immediately pinned the entire blame on the speechless Aura.
Aura: “?”
She’s slandering me!
No matter what, Eileen was still her first master. In her eyes, Eileen’s status was even higher than Emir’s. How could she possibly have hurt her?
But since she couldn’t speak human language, she had no choice but to endure it…
“Is that so?”
Kate remained half-convinced, but after carefully examining the marks on Eileen’s body—mostly just bruises—they did match the kind of injuries she described.
After all, a beast was a beast. It wouldn’t carefully consider whether Eileen might get hurt inside its mouth.
Even so, after figuring it out, Kate still shot Aura a vicious glare.
Regardless of everything else, Aura had still injured her Eileen. If not for Eileen’s sake, she would have loved nothing more than to stew the wolf and use her to properly nourish Eileen’s body.
A chill ran down Aura’s spine.
Why did this woman named Kate seem to harbor such heavy killing intent toward her?
She was pretty sure she had never provoked this person before…
“Eileen, why did you…”
“Shh. Don’t say anything yet!”
Emir had just been about to ask why Eileen wasn’t telling Kate the truth when Eileen cut her off.
If she told the truth right now, Kate and Emir would really fight to the death today…
Emir didn’t understand Eileen’s meaning, but she obediently closed her mouth.
“Eileen, since you say she isn’t an enemy, then why was she working with that Lawson guy?”
Kate asked.
She had already learned most of what happened last night from Mia. It was obvious that Emir was the mastermind behind the entire affair.
Someone who planned to sacrifice every citizen of Mordin City with a forbidden art—how could she possibly not be an enemy?
Simply turning Lawson and having him carry out such a twisted plan already placed her in direct opposition to Kate as a member of the Duke’s Private Knight Order.
“About that…”
Eileen didn’t know how to explain for a moment.
Emir had kept her busy until the middle of the night last night. She hadn’t had any chance to ask about this at all.
Seeing that Eileen didn’t seem to fully understand what had happened the previous night, Kate added, “Lawson cut off the city’s food supply. Everyone in the city has been going hungry during this period, and quite a few people have already starved to death. Eileen, what do you think she was trying to do?”
The moment Kate said that, Eileen immediately connected it to that heinous forbidden art from the game.
“Orpheus’s Scale?”
Eileen looked at Emir, her eyes full of confusion.
What kind of stimulation had Emir suffered over these five years to resort to such an extreme forbidden art against the innocent citizens of Mordin City?
Emir was an extremely vindictive person—that much was clear from the “interest” she had collected last night.
If only a few people from Mordin City had offended her, wouldn’t it have been enough to just eliminate those few offenders?
There was no need to drag an entire city down with them…
“Orpheus’s Scale? No wonder that guy wanted me to do something like this…”
Hearing the term, Emir seemed to finally snap out of her thoughts and muttered to herself.
Kate gave a cold laugh and once again raised her long spear, the tip pointed straight at Emir’s face. “There’s no point pretending to be innocent at this stage. If we hadn’t discovered it in time, you really would have succeeded!”
Seeing Kate so hostile, Eileen hurriedly tried to smooth things over. “Kate, there must be some misunderstanding in all of this. From what I know of Emir, she would never commit such an inhumane atrocity!”
“Eileen, she’s an elf who has already colluded with the demon race. What do you think she’s still incapable of doing?”
The attitude of the elven race toward demons was like water and fire—they could never coexist even if the world itself were destroyed.
Yet Emir had gone and allied herself with the demons. It was completely unheard of.
Since Emir could already disregard the laws of her ancestors and stand with the demons, then using a forbidden art to sacrifice the citizens of an entire city suddenly became plausible.
A person without principles could do anything without surprising anyone.
At this point, even Eileen was starting to feel lost.
Because of her special experiences, Emir was no longer as xenophobic toward outsiders as other elves. But colluding with the demon race still came as a huge surprise.
She had to remember that when Emir had followed her to farm dungeons in the Demon Realm, they had wiped out a great many demons. Some demon races had even been hunted down until they became rare species.
Emir’s reputation in the Demon Realm was no less terrifying than that of a Doomslayer in Hell. Lesser demons would probably lose sleep just hearing her name.
Even if the demons still harbored ambitions toward the Human Realm, they wouldn’t go looking for a walking god of death like this to do their dirty work, would they?
Weren’t they afraid Emir might turn around and kill them all instead?
“Emir, what exactly has been going on with you these past few years?”
Unfortunately, asking that question was a mistake. The moment the words left Eileen’s mouth, Emir’s emotions surged.
“Eileen, how dare you even ask?”
“Huh?”
“You saved me when I was at my most desperate and most painful. You gave me a love and care I had never felt before. From that moment on, you became my everything.
And then, after making your promises, you simply vanished for five whole years. Once I realized I had been deceived, I truly almost…
If not for clinging to that empty promise you left me, if not for still having to take care of Aura, there probably wouldn’t be an Emir left in this world anymore.”
Emir poured everything out in one breath. Eileen listened in shame and self-reproach.
Thinking back on everything she had done in the first playthrough, even if Emir had simply stabbed her to death right then and there, it wouldn’t have been unjust.
“Eileen?”
At that moment, an extremely resentful voice suddenly reached Eileen’s ears.
In that instant, Eileen realized…
I’m finished!
Eileen frantically signaled Emir with her eyes to stop talking, but once Emir’s floodgates opened, there was no way she was closing them so easily.
Rather than simply complaining, it was more like she was pouring out all the disappointment and regret that Eileen’s five-year absence had left behind.
“These five years, I did so many things just to stop thinking about you. But every late night, the memories of every little moment with you would still come back.
Those memories were so beautiful they felt like a dream. But once the dream ended, every one of those beautiful things turned into sharp thorns piercing my heart, tormenting me until I wanted to die.
I wanted to erase those memories that caused me so much pain, so I kept searching for a way to wipe them away. Until some time ago, a middleman found me and said that as long as I helped with one job, he could erase those memories for me…”
“So that is your reason for everything you did to Mordin City?”
Kate looked at her coldly.
Emir did not deny it.
“That’s right. But I didn’t know he was actually planning to sacrifice everyone in Mordin… Not that I cared either way.”
Kate laughed.
It was a laugh of pure anger.
Whatever love or hatred existed between Eileen and Emir no longer mattered to her for the moment. The only thing that still concerned her was…
“You were willing to go this far just to forget the memories of Eileen… Does her very existence cause you that much pain?”
