Lane looked up at the dome of the Spirit Hall, where an eerie calm was spreading across the ceiling.
He knew this was because the world he saw was different from what the spirits perceived.
The Spirit King and the Calamity were currently clashing within the Spirit Realm, a dimension that the naked human eye could not capture.
Only after forming a contract with a spirit could he briefly glimpse the Spirit Realm through their eyes.
If they could not stop the Calamity here, the Spirit Hall would inevitably be eroded, losing its purity.
The moment the Spirit Hall ceased to be pure, all spirits would have their very essences altered, transforming into part of the invading Calamity’s swarm.
At that point, the Spirit Covenant would cease to exist.
Instead, the Calamity would likely use the corrupted covenant to reverse-control any humans who once held a pact with the Spirit King.
In fact, the more Lane thought about it, the more he felt that this Calamity invasion was likely designed specifically to pollute the covenant and control humanity.
When that happened, not only would Lita and Claude’s families be affected, but Lane himself would likely be dragged into the fallout.
He had to help the Spirit King repel the Calamity.
They were both in the same boat now — helping the Spirit King was the same as helping himself.
Lane’s expression turned solemn.
Recalling Kaka’s respectful attitude toward him, he felt he had a real chance.
“Kaka, I need your help. Form a contract with me and become the savior of your people.”
The moment the words left Lane’s mouth, he felt a bit awkward.
He felt as if some strange, white, furry creature with red eyes was staring at him from somewhere.
Hearing that a Great Existence wanted to sign a Spirit Covenant with it, Kaka felt as if an electric current was surging through its body.
The sheer pleasure of being acknowledged by a god nearly made it let out a soft moan.
“I am at your service, Great Lord of the Covenant!”
What was there to hesitate about?
God had personally handpicked it to be the savior of the tribe!
Old… no!
Spirit King, you, with your measly combat power of 72, are no longer fit to sit in that position!
From now on, I, Kaka the Divine Attendant, am everyone’s boss!
The Spirit Hall is about to welcome its new King!
“It is my honor!”
Unable to wait a second longer, Kaka exploded on the spot.
Its body transformed into streaks of brilliant runes that dove into the sea of consciousness within Lane’s mind through his forehead.
“Ah!”
Lita was startled by the sudden scene, her face flushing with a hint of panic.
But seeing Lane’s expressionless, calm acceptance of the situation, she refused to be outdone.
She puffed out her chest slightly, as if trying to prove something to herself.
Lane gave her a bewildered glance.
‘I’m the one forming a contract, not you. What are you looking so proud for?’
He had no idea what was wrong with the girl.
Ignoring Lita’s confusing behavior, Lane focused on the swearing-in process of the Spirit Covenant within his mind.
The so-called swearing-in process involved the spirit, now in the form of runes, carving a unique mark into the contractor’s sea of consciousness.
The contractor then had to fully accommodate and accept the existence of this mark.
Every spirit would begin to change its form the moment the contract was signed, completing its evolution and revealing a brand-new appearance once the oath was finished.
The final image depended on the spirit’s own will and the contractor’s perception of what a spirit was.
Lane remembered that Lita’s spirit, Nunu, had eventually evolved into a beautiful ball of light.
In the original story, Kaka had never signed a contract with anyone, so Lane was curious to see what the evolved Kaka would look like.
Soon, Lane’s eyes began to brighten.
He could feel the misty memories in his mind becoming clearer and clearer.
The contract was complete!
As he realized this, the spirit runes engraved in Lane’s sea of consciousness poured out from his forehead, beginning to reconstruct a new form.
Roughly 3 seconds later, a tiny figure wearing a green maid outfit appeared before them.
Kaka’s new image was very similar to a miniature fairy from a fantasy work.
She was roughly 15 centimeters tall with long green hair, pointed ears, and two transparent wings on her back that were as thin as a cicada’s.
Looking at the bundle of green before him, Lane suddenly fell into deep thought.
Setting aside the somewhat jarring maid outfit, Kaka’s overall image made him involuntarily hallucinate a certain trashy fairy from a particularly unhinged adult RPG.
‘Is this my perception of spirits? And the maid outfit represents Kaka’s will? She wants to serve me?’
‘Please, no!’
‘Dead memories are attacking my brain!’
Lane was terrified that Kaka would suddenly start “writing fairy tales” at the slightest provocation.
‘I really have to give you a happy and joyful life.jpg’
Sometimes, having memories become incredibly clear wasn’t necessarily a good thing.
Compared to Lane, who was freaking out internally, Kaka was quite satisfied with her new image.
Her appearance matched God’s aesthetics, her attire expressed her loyalty to God, and her gender was likely influenced by the female attendant standing nearby.
The last point was a minor issue; spirits didn’t really have genders to begin with.
However, since God walked the world as a male, how could she, as a Divine Attendant, continue to maintain a vague gender?
That would be a supreme sign of disrespect!
Kaka was very determined.
She had even chosen a brand-new name for herself and decided to use a new verbal tic to celebrate her rebirth.
“Respected Lord of the Contract, this humble one has a small request. This one hopes you will allow your most loyal servant to serve you with a brand-new name. What do you think of the name ‘Mary Sue’?”
“No, I think the name Kaka is very good. I like it. There’s no need to throw away the name that originally belonged to you.”
Hearing Kaka’s suggested name, Lane’s face nearly turned green.
That name was bad news, and that “this humble one” verbal tic was also a bit much.
But rejecting everything might dampen Kaka’s enthusiasm, so Lane ultimately only shot down the idea of changing her name.
As for the verbal tic… he would let it slide.
Kaka felt disappointed for only a brief moment before she quickly adjusted.
‘God doesn’t want me to change my name. That means God is sentimental, loving, and tolerant.’
Thinking this, Kaka lowered her head even more respectfully.
From start to finish, Kaka had only looked at Lane directly once at the beginning.
After glimpsing God’s majesty, she had kept her head bowed while speaking to him.
That dazzling score made the old Kaka feel that even looking directly at Lane was a sin.
But now that she was a Divine Attendant, she surely had the right to gaze upon God’s countenance!
The excitement in her heart made Kaka unable to resist looking up —
As expected! God was still just as majestic!
Just as dazzling!
Look at that firm face, that cool gaze, that off-the-charts score…
Suddenly, as Kaka looked at the space above Lane’s head, she felt as if she had been struck by lightning.
An expression of utter disbelief appeared on her face as she wondered if she was dreaming.
Where was God!?
Where did God go!?
Where did this one’s massive 100 points go?
Was there a 0 missing from the number above God’s head?
10 points?
Where the hell did this stray dog come from?
He isn’t even fit to shine my shoes!
But the connection from the contract told Kaka that the person in front of her was indeed that suspected God-like existence she had so joyfully signed a pact with.
Why!?
Why did God’s combat power suddenly drop to the point of being worse than a stray dog on the street?
Dammit… did I follow the wrong person?!
