Su Shuhao didn’t know how she got home; she had been in a state of dazed confusion, even a bit soul-crushing, the entire way.
She couldn’t understand it.
Her best friend had told her that if a man truly loved her, a simple “test” should be absolutely no problem.
Besides, she had tested him many times before.
Logically, Gu Bai wouldn’t actually agree to break up, right?
Su Shuhao couldn’t make sense of it, nor could she understand Gu Baiโs reasoning.
It wasn’t until she got home and saw her glamorous reflection in the floor-length mirror that her heart flared with indignation.
With hands on her hips, she said arrogantly:
“Tch! A plain guy who isn’t even that tallโhaving a girlfriend like me is clearly his honor! He actually doesn’t know how to cherish it.”
As Su Shuhao was grumbling and cursing, a small head peeked out from the living room.
A girl wearing glasses asked her, “Sis, who upset you?”
Hearing the voice, Su Shuhao restrained her expression.
She walked into the living room, kicked off her black leather shoes, rested her white-stockinged feet on the sofa armrest, and lay down.
“Who else could it be? Just that good-for-nothing boyfriend of mine.”
Though she had composed herself slightly, her tone was still filled with irritation and frustration.
Seeking validation, she turned to her sister.
“Su Wanโer, tell me, how can a person change so suddenly? I remember Gu Bai wasn’t like this before. I just wanted to test his feelings, so I brought up breaking up to see if he’d buy me that new Flandre bag. And then… the ungrateful jerk actually agreed! Itโs driving me crazy…”
Compared to Su Shuhao, her younger sister, Su Wanโer, appeared much more plain.
Perhaps because Su Shuhao had been so well taken care of by Gu Bai, even though they were family, they didn’t look like they belonged to the same social class.
In front of Su Shuhao, Su Wanโer looked like a very ordinary, inconspicuous girl.
However, if one looked closely, they would notice that Su Wanโer had a very good foundation.
Her looks weren’t much inferior to her sister’s, and with a bit of dressing up, her beauty would certainly not be lacking.
But because of a distressing incident when her senior year of high school started, combined with limited family finances, she didn’t enjoy dressing herself up.
Facing her sister’s question, Su Wanโer clearly knew that the other was looking for her to take a side and echo her views.
However, without hesitation, Su Wanโer shook her head and said:
“I think… itโs your fault, Sis.”
Although Su Wanโer had never met her “brother-in-law” or even seen a photo, she had heard snippets about him from Su Shuhao.
From those few words, she could guess that he had a very good personality and almost wholeheartedly satisfied her sister’s every whim.
Some might call him a “simp,” but Su Wanโer felt that was wrong.
What was wrong with a spirit that sacrificed everything for love?
The only mistake was meeting the wrong person.
As an outsider, Su Wanโer could see clearly: once they broke up, the one who wouldn’t be able to handle it would be her spoiled sister.
Thus, Su Wanโer continued, “Sis, are you planning to give up completely? He was so gentle and considerate to you.”
“I never even liked him that much!”
Su Shuhao said defiantly.
“I didn’t like him from the start. If heโs gone, Iโll just find another boyfriend. Who cares?”
Enjoying the gentleness and care provided by someone else, yet treating their feelings like dirt?
Su Wanโer sighed inwardly and said, “If you won’t regret it, Sis, then itโs fine to let go.”
By the time Gu Bai returned to his university dormitory, it was around 7:30 PM.
The “good sons” in the dorm were as noisy as ever.
Gu Bai placed his hand on the door, hesitated for a moment, and then pushed it open.
“Iโm back.”
Upon hearing his voice, the three roommates instantly went silent.
They looked at each other until finally, one “brave warrior” stepped forward and asked:
“White Brother, why are you back at the dorm?”
Normally, Gu Bai lived in a rented apartment off-campus; after all, it wasn’t convenient to date without some private space.
Of course, Gu Bai and Su Shuhao had never been intimate.
In their two years together, the most they had done was hold hands.
Because he rarely stayed at the dorm, seeing him there was like seeing a ghost to his roommates.
“Can’t I come back to play some games and carry you guys?”
Gu Bai gave them a look of mock disdain.
“I brought dinner back. My treat tonightโit’s your favorite braised pork.”
“Ohhh! Father is mighty! Father is generous!”
In the dull routine of university life, only these three roommates brought a bit of fun.
The three “sons,” who had been hungry all day, scrambled off their beds and sat around the small table in the center of the room. While eating, they asked:
“White Brother, aren’t you usually with Su Shuhao at this time? How do you have time to come back today?”
The speaker was Wang Yu, a thin guy with black-rimmed glasses who looked like he could be blown away by a gust of wind.
Hearing this, Gu Bai calmly uttered two words:
“We broke up.”
This simple sentence stunned the three of them.
Their chopsticks froze mid-air.
They stared at each other for a while before Wang Yu asked hesitantly:
“Really? When you were chasing her… the three of us couldn’t even pull you back. How did it… just end like that?”
“Yeah, you’ve been together for over two years. Even if it were a cat, you’d have developed deep feelings by now. White Brother, you’re not just speaking out of anger, are you?”
Beside Wang Yu was his younger twin brother, Wang Fu.
They looked very similar, but the younger brother was slightly chubbier, which was the key to telling them apart.
Faced with their concern and confusion, Gu Bai’s expression remained neutral, showing no sign of sadness.
He simply shook his head.
“It’s not anger. We really broke up, and thereโs a high probability we won’t get back together in the future.”
“But…”
Wang Fu wanted to say more, but his brother Wang Yu stopped him and laughed heartily.
“Itโs fine! Itโs Su Shuhaoโs loss, not yours. How could our handsome White Brother ever lack a girlfriend? No big deal!”
With that, Wang Yu pulled a large bottle of Cola from his cabinet, poured four disposable cups full, and said to Gu Bai:
“Since you’re back, the brothers will make sure you have a good time tonight. After we finish eating, weโre logging on! We’ll carry you to glory!”
Looking at the cup of Cola Wang Yu held up, Gu Bai felt a spark of warmth in his heart.
He had given so much to Su Shuhao, only to end up with a mess of feathers.
Yet, he just brought his roommates dinner, and they were ready to call him “Father” and cheer him up.
All these years…
What was I even doing?
